Sworn and attested interpreting

Sworn interpreter in Verviers and Eupen
court, notary, municipality

The Verviers division of the Liège court of first instance sits here in town: anyone from Spa, Malmedy or Welkenraedt is summoned to Verviers. Our sworn interpreters attend there, as well as at notaries' offices and at the municipal counters of the district.

Our assignments

The places our sworn interpreters attend

These situations share one feature: what is said there legally binds the person saying it.

01

Hearings

Civil, family, juvenile and criminal chambers sitting in the Verviers division, plus the magistrates' courts of the neighbouring cantons.

02

Notaries' offices

Sale agreement, deed of sale, estate, gift, marriage contract. The signatory must understand what is being signed, and the notary must be able to attest to it.

03

Civil status and population

Marriage celebrated in the municipal hall, declaration of legal cohabitation, visit to the population desk or to the foreign nationals office.

04

Expert assessments and findings

Adversarial assessments, conciliation meetings, service of documents, with an attested interpreter in the language pair requested.

05

Mediation and amicable settlement

Family or commercial mediation, negotiation of a settlement, meetings between parties assisted by their counsel.

06

Residence and nationality

Administrative interviews about residence, about an application for nationality or about an international protection procedure.

Professional ethics

Neutral, including when that harms the speaker

A sworn interpreter renders everything that is said: the hesitations, the badly built sentences and whatever tells against the person speaking.

He does not advise, does not summarise, never answers in anyone's place and withdraws as soon as he knows one of the parties. These rules are not a matter of manners: an interpreter who steps outside his role weakens the act itself, and his involvement may be challenged far later.

That is precisely why a family member, however bilingual, cannot take on this role before a judge or a notary.

  • Register entry checked before every assignment
  • Immediate withdrawal where a party is known
  • Professional secrecy with no expiry date
  • Full rendering, with no filtering or summarising
The role

What a sworn interpreter does and what he refuses

Neutrality is not a pose: it is the core of the trade.

He renders everything

Hesitations, contradictions, clumsy phrasing: it all goes through. Nothing is smoothed over, nothing shortened, nothing explained in the person's place.

He does not advise

No answer given on anyone's behalf, no comment, no opinion, not even when asked outright.

He declares any tie to a party

As soon as he recognises one of those present, he withdraws. An ethical duty, not a courtesy.

He is bound to secrecy

Secrecy covers the whole assignment and does not lapse, even years after the file is closed.

A bilingual relative is no substitute for a sworn interpreter. He is not attested, he has a stake in the matter, and the other side can challenge his presence. The risk peaks in family matters: interpreting for one's own distorts the rendering without anyone noticing at the time.

Booking

From your request to the courtroom

The earlier you warn us, the wider the choice. That said, the last minute fills a good share of our weeks.

  1. 01

    You set out the framework

Date, time, precise address, language, nature of the act, estimated duration. The form takes two minutes to fill in.

  2. 02

    Confirmation in 1 h

We identify a sworn interpreter in the pair requested, then come back to you with the price.

  3. 03

    Preparing the file

The interpreter takes in the context and the vocabulary of the case, within the limits of professional secrecy.

  4. 04

    Attendance on site

He arrives early, reports to the registry, the clerk or the registrar, then to the parties before the case is called.

Our guarantees

01

Entry genuinely verified

We look up the national register of judicial experts for that precise pair, never for the language as a whole.

02

Urgent cases absorbed

Hearing brought forward, a party turning out to be non-French-speaking the day before: most often someone frees up within 24 hours.

03

German and rare languages

German, Turkish, Italian, Arabic, Romanian, Albanian, Tigrinya. Sworn German is especially scarce the closer you get to the border, and that is exactly where we find it.

04

Travel at no charge

No mileage charge across the 16 municipalities served, from the centre of Verviers to Stavelot, Aubel or Eupen.

05

Punctuality

The interpreter is there ahead of time and reports in. A hearing adjourned for want of an interpreter cannot be recovered the same day.

06

Professional secrecy

Confidentiality agreement signed, and withdrawal without argument as soon as a tie to a party emerges.

Frequently asked questions

Who pays the interpreter?

It depends on the setting. In criminal matters the interpreter appointed by the court is borne by the State. In civil matters, at the notary's or for a municipal formality, the cost falls in principle on whoever needs to understand. We bill whoever places the order, and the quote makes this clear before the assignment.

How much notice is needed to book?

Five working days give the widest choice. That said, requests for the following day make up a sizeable part of our workload: one call is enough to find out whether it can be done.

Is German often called for at hearings?

More often than elsewhere in Wallonia. The German-speaking Community starts some twenty kilometres away, and many residents of the district work on the German side. Employment disputes, divorces, neighbour disputes: sworn German comes round regularly, at hearings and at the notary's alike.

Can a sworn translator also interpret?

Sworn translator and sworn interpreter are two separate qualifications, even though some professionals hold both. Where a file calls for both services, we coordinate them and you deal with a single contact.

What if the hearing is postponed?

Tell us straight away. More than five working days before the date, nothing is charged to you. Below that, a fee applies: the interpreter had blocked the slot and turned down other work. It appears on the quote, so you do not discover it afterwards.
