Documents handled

legal & notarial: what we translate day to day

The Verviers division of the Liège court of first instance sits in town: a litigant from Spa, Malmedy or Welkenraedt is summoned here, not to Liège. On top of that come the files that spill over into Germany and the Netherlands, two immediate neighbours. A procedural document is not translated word for word: it is the reasoning that has to reach the judge intact.

01

Procedural documents

Submissions, writs, schedules of exhibits and judgments to be filed with the Verviers division or before the magistrate's court.

02

Notarial deeds

Sales, gifts, marriage contracts and powers of attorney executed by a practice in Verviers, Herve or Spa.

03

Cross-border estates

European certificates of succession, attestations of inheritance and inventories from Germany, the Netherlands, Italy or Turkey.

04

Divorce and family law

Divorce judgments, separation agreements and residence rulings where one parent lives on the other side of the border.

05

Company law

Articles of association, Crossroads Bank extracts, shareholder resolutions and share transfers, common where the capital is German or Dutch.

06

Legalisation at the FPS Justice

We have the sworn translator's signature legalised. For an apostille we point you to the right department: the request stays yours to make.

How we read the sector

What the legal & notarial sector demands here

The Verviers division of the Liège court of first instance sits in town, and the magistrates' courts of the cantons cover the whole district. On top of that comes everything a territory sitting on three borders produces: Aachen and the Rhineland forty kilometres away, Maastricht and Dutch Limburg barely further, Luxembourg to the south. Estates opened abroad, divorces between spouses of two nationalities, cross-border employment contracts and debts to recover beyond the Vesdre all pass through the same offices. A badly translated document cannot be repaired on appeal: our translators render the function of a court rather than its name, since no legal system maps exactly onto another.

Any document going to the registry or to an authority carries the signature of a translator listed on the national register of legal experts and sworn translators, with their stamp and statement of conformity. Where the registry or a consulate further requires that signature to be legalised, we take it to the FPS Justice. Not to be confused with the apostille: that one applies to the original document, depends on the FPS Foreign Affairs or on the issuing authority, and you apply for it yourself. The quote merely tells you whether your file is subject to one.

German holds a place here that no other Walloon district knows. The German-speaking Community begins in Eupen, twenty kilometres away, and the documents coming from there, like those from across the Rhine, arrive drafted in that language. Every file is covered by a confidentiality agreement, and we sign yours before receiving the documents if your professional rules require it.

Bringing in an interpreter

The appointments that call for an interpreter

Before a judge or a notary, a loose sentence does not erase itself: it stays in the record.

In the courtroom

Civil and family chambers of the Verviers division, magistrates' courts across the district, labour tribunal.

Expert reports and service of process

Expert meetings, site visits and service of documents by a bailiff in Dison, Theux, Limbourg or Stavelot.

At the notary's office

Division of an estate, marriage contract or sale signed with a sworn interpreter present.

Family mediation

Mediation sessions and amicable settlements between parties with no language in common.

Being close to the border exempts you from nothing. The Verviers division hears cases in French: a document drawn up in German or in Dutch must travel with its sworn translation, even if its author lives twenty kilometres from the registry. The same principle applies to a Belgian ruling produced before a foreign court.

How it works

From your first message to the finished document

One project manager carries your legal & notarial file, so you explain your situation only once.

  1. 01

A photo of the document is enough

Snap it with your phone; the framing hardly matters. For an interpreting assignment, give us the language, the date and the address.

  2. 02

The quote goes out within the hour

It states the amount, the delivery date and the format: sworn if an authority demands it, standard otherwise. No charge, no commitment.

  3. 03

The file goes to the right linguist

A translator who works with legal & notarial vocabulary takes it on, then a reviser goes over the text before anything leaves us.

  4. 04

File delivered or interpreter on site

The file arrives by email; the stamped copy follows by registered post if the counter wants the original. The interpreter travels to you.

Our guarantees

Why entrust us with a legal & notarial file

01

The language pair is verified

Registration on the national register applies to one specific language pair. We check it for the pair your case actually needs, German into French as much as Dutch into French.

02

Your NDA comes before ours

We sign your firm's confidentiality agreement exactly as drafted, before a single document changes hands.

03

A specialist, not an all-rounder

A technical, medical or legal text never lands with a jack-of-all-trades, not even when the deadline is tight.

04

Confidentiality in writing

Everyone involved signs a confidentiality undertaking. Your files stay on European servers and disappear whenever you ask.

05

The figure stops moving

The number on the quote is the number on the invoice. Translation, revision and delivery are already in it; nothing is added along the way.

06

Travel with no mileage charge

Our interpreters drive to Verviers, Dison, Pepinster, Theux, Spa, Herve, Welkenraedt, Malmedy or Eupen at no extra cost for the journey.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Will a document in German be accepted as it stands in Verviers?

No. German is indeed the third national language, but the Verviers division hears cases in French: the document travels with its sworn translation, stamp, signature and statement of conformity included. We mirror the numbering of your schedule of exhibits, so the filing does not have to be rebuilt at the registry.

An estate opened in Germany or the Netherlands, where do you start?

With the European certificate of succession and the deceased's civil status records. The Belgian notary works from those translated documents, while the German or Dutch colleague expects their own in the other direction. We handle both directions and keep one single spelling of the names from deed to deed.

Do your interpreters travel as far as Malmedy or Eupen?

Yes, with no mileage charge: those municipalities are inside our area. Give us the time the case is called rather than the time the session opens, and the courtroom if you know it. Allow 24 h to secure a sworn interpreter.

Will a bulky file fit a procedural timetable?

We start from your hearing date and count backwards. A translator covers around 2,000 words per working day; beyond that, several legal linguists share the file around a single glossary, and a final read aligns the terminology from volume to volume.
