finance & insurance: what we translate day to day

A great many households in the district declare income on both sides of a border: employees working in Aachen, self-employed people invoicing into the Netherlands, pensioners drawing a German pension. The accountancy firms here build those files all year round. One balance sheet item rendered badly, and the whole document loses its weight with the recipient.

How we read the sector

What the finance & insurance sector demands here

One balance sheet line rendered sideways, or an exclusion clause approximated from a distance, is enough to make a document unusable. Our linguists know the Belgian chart of accounts, the headings used when filing with the National Bank and the vocabulary of the IFRS standards. They also know that insurance categories do not overlap from one country to the next, and that a German or Dutch contract cannot be read with Belgian reflexes.

Cross-border employment is structural here. Thousands of people live in the district and declare income in Germany, the Netherlands or Luxembourg, or the other way round: payslips, employer certificates, A1 forms, foreign tax assessments and double taxation treaties move constantly between the firms. Intended for a bank, a tax authority or a foreign insurer, these documents often call for the sworn version, with the signature legalised at the FPS Justice where the receiving country requires it.

Insurance files linked to the Vesdre flood damage also continue to occupy brokers and loss adjusters: reports, counter-surveys and settlement statements sometimes have to be read by a reinsurer abroad. Handling follows the same logic as everything else: access limited to the account manager and the linguist, no pointless internal circulation, deletion after delivery as soon as you say the word.

  • Balance sheet, profit and loss account, notes
  • Tax returns and tax assessment notices
  • Bank statements and certificates from the bank
  • Credit, mortgage loan and leasing agreements
Bringing in an interpreter

The appointments that call for an interpreter

In a financial meeting, a clause taken the wrong way does not show up immediately. It surfaces at the first instalment.

Bank appointments

Opening an account, presenting a credit application, explaining an interest clause or a guarantee.

Loss adjustment

Adversarial meetings with a policyholder or with an adjuster from Germany or the Netherlands.

Boards and general meetings

Board meetings and general meetings where foreign shareholders have to follow the debate live.

Tax audit

Exchanges with the inspector, where nothing may be added or left out.

A foreign bank or tax office rarely settles for a standard translation: it wants the sworn version, and often the translator's signature legalised at the FPS Justice. We arrange that legalisation. If an apostille is demanded on top, on the original document, we tell you which department issues it, but the request is yours to make. Allow a few extra working days, knowing that a tax deadline is not open to negotiation.

How it works

From your first message to the finished document

One project manager carries your finance & insurance file, so you explain your situation only once.

  1. 01

A photo of the document is enough

Snap it with your phone; the framing hardly matters. For an interpreting assignment, give us the language, the date and the address.

  2. 02

The quote goes out within the hour

It states the amount, the delivery date and the format: sworn if an authority demands it, standard otherwise. No charge, no commitment.

  3. 03

The file goes to the right linguist

A translator who works with finance & insurance vocabulary takes it on, then a reviser goes over the text before anything leaves us.

  4. 04

File delivered or interpreter on site

The file arrives by email; the stamped copy follows by registered post if the counter wants the original. The interpreter travels to you.

Our guarantees

Why entrust us with a finance & insurance file

01

The accounting framework holds

Our financial translators reuse the headings of the Belgian chart of accounts and, where needed, those of the IFRS. An item missing from the reader's framework is explained in a note rather than matched by guesswork.

02

Two people see your figures

On a sensitive file, two people open the documents: the one handling it and the one translating it. A word from you after delivery, and it all disappears.

03

A specialist, not an all-rounder

A technical, medical or legal text never lands with a jack-of-all-trades, not even when the deadline is tight.

04

Confidentiality in writing

Everyone involved signs a confidentiality undertaking. Your files stay on European servers and disappear whenever you ask.

05

The figure stops moving

The number on the quote is the number on the invoice. Translation, revision and delivery are already in it; nothing is added along the way.

06

Travel with no mileage charge

Our interpreters drive to Verviers, Dison, Pepinster, Theux, Spa, Herve, Welkenraedt, Malmedy or Eupen at no extra cost for the journey.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

We look after cross-border workers going to Germany: what needs translating?

Usually the certificate of tax residence, the pay slips and the certificates the German tax office asks for. Some accept a standard translation, others insist on the sworn version. Ask them before writing to us: the answer weighs on the calendar as much as on the price.

Does a Dutch file follow the same rules?

The documents requested differ, the logic does not. The Dutch tax authority and the insurance funds ask for their own forms, sometimes with a sworn translation. We translate in both directions and keep the official Dutch headings wherever they need to stay recognisable.

Our annual accounts go to a parent company: do you translate them?

Yes, the accountancy firms of the district send them to us regularly. The balance sheet keeps its Belgian architecture; it is the headings that move into the reader's language. Items missing from their framework are explained in a note rather than forced.

A deadline is approaching: how do you adapt?

Give us the exact date, not an order of magnitude. The schedule is built backwards from the filing. If the volume will not fit, several linguists share the work and a final read aligns the vocabulary. On a single document, the 24 to 48 h rush service stays open.
